Newell Hall University of Florida

Gainesville, Florida

A 2017 renovation to Wilmon E. Newell Hall transformed the more-than 100-year-old building into a four-story Learning Commons for University of Florida students. The updated space includes a variety of bold graphic moments and dynamic signage elements throughout the building that ensure each floor embraces a “non-library” concept allowing students to work and learn, both collaboratively and individually. These moments seamlessly create a unified and cohesive graphic presentation designed to inspire and enhance the student experience. Centered around the history of Newell Hall and the four overarching themes of the building – focus, collaborate, interact and rejuvenate – each floor showcases these themes in an integrated, flexible environment. Floor entrances pay homage to the building’s rich history by incorporating the original building materials into the displays, while movable partitions featuring interactive games invite students to take a break from studying and engage in a collaborative or creative moment.
