The story
GRIME is an underground music developed in the 2000's on the streets of East London and belongs to the broader category of R'n'B, electro, reggae. The philosophy of this music is to describe the difficult situations in life faced by new generations in an aggressively expressive and fearless way. The melodies build up self-belief and stimulate agile movement while integrated with city sounds. The lyrics are deeply political, humorous and at times offensive. The first forms of GRIME appeared on the streets by gangs' and students' competitions and all recordings were done secretly in garages. The CDs resembled the old mixed tape type and were distributed by hand while the songs became known from shows on pirate stations and graffiti representations of lyrics on walls.
Design Direction
The ideology of this music is directly related to street philosophy in a fast-paced metropolis, hiding from the police, and freedom of speech which are portrayed on the CD artwork through the black and white big city background element, the dark, questionable figure, and the disruptive splash of bright yellow that creates tension and is revolutionary because it relates to intellect and caution at the same time.
The intention of the poster design is to draw attention to the few who can recognize the artist by the figure. The message is coded yet daring, following the logic of treasure hunt.
(Student project - artist and album already exist, scope is a redesigned proposal)
