Communication and Representation

For Communication and Representation we had to create either a Dj booth, 24 hour convenance store or a place to contemplate nature. Firstly, we had to measure a certain section of Ravensburne. Me and my group was given the mezzanine level to measure to scale. This section of ravensbourne is where the RSU (Ravensbourne Student Union) is based. Here is our website with all our work on it. www.behance.net/IDEASgroup5

From then on we were each given an Architect to study, mine being the great Arne Jacobsen, specialist architect and designer who revolutionised Danish and Modern architecture in the mid 1900s. From this research, I then had to come up with initial ideas of one of the designs mentioned above, which had to be inspired by the Architects style of work, both aesthetically and structurally.

Below are my thought processes noted down and how I came to the decision to do what I was going to do.

After what I was going to do and coming up with reasons to justify why I should do it, I then moved on to sketching and noting down various ideas and building on initial ideas to come up with a suitable design worthy of manufacturing and constructing. My design changed various times because of the aesthetics, suitability and prop selling. Guidelines in accordance with the Metric Handbook also dramatically influenced and changed my idea. Below are images documenting my process.
After coming up with various possiblities, I started to sketch out possibilities in a plan view. But as shown below, the ideas were cut short as I felt I wasn't relating the work to my Architects practice as well as I should have been. I therefore went back to the drawing board, and came up with ideas as to how I could really implement his work into my designs.
After contemplating spherical shapes, which Arne Jacobsen used frequently in his designs, I noticed the aesthetically pleasing and modernistic view his 'Bellavista Apartments' portrayed. They worked via cantilevers, beans stretched across his original structure to out hanging balconies. With this in mind, I decided to look into how cantilevers work, and came up with a few ideas as to how I could look to pursue my idea.
Once I found an idea that I felt comfortable with and ready to pursue, I made sure it followed some of the precedents set by Arne Jacobsen. I intended on using a lot of steel and see-through glass as he incorporated this a lot in his work thanks to the influence afflicted on him by Mies Van Der Rohe. Below are to scale drawings of the rough design proposal shown directly above, showcasing the layout, as well as the materials used and how users would occupy the space.
Lastly, below is a model and a series of images showing my idea proposal in Google Sketch Up (CAD)
