This piece is from old-growth compression stumpage, meaning that the wood came from stumps left in the forest when trees were logged over 100 years ago.  You can see the remaining old trees in our state parks and forests, protected now.
Old growth stumpage with naturally burnt rim - meaning the burn is from forest fires this tree and/or stump withstood through it's many years in the forest.
This is a nested set from 2nd or 3rd growth redwood burl.  Each bowl blank is "coned" during the turning process, allowing us to use as much of the wood as possible.  Occasionally one such coning asks to remain together.
A calabash form from old growth compression stumpage.  This traditional shape is influenced by our years in Hawai'i..
Old growth compression flame in a traditional ogee, one of Jerry's signature shapes.
Old growth burl with natural staining from it's year's as a stump.
Old growth compression curl platter with burnt embellished rim.  Fire is a symbiotic part of the redwood's life, as the forest fires clear the underbrush and help the trees to send up their sprouts.
