Como parte da disciplina de Metodologia Visual, este projeto toma uma abordagem visual abstrata para tratar a cultura Akan – um grupo étnico da África Ocidental. O objetivo era conseguir representar parte da enorme história desse povo africano.
As part of the Visual Methodology discipline, this project takes an abstract visual approach to the Akan culture – an ethnic group from West Africa. The goal was to represent part of the enormous history of this African group.
Vários elementos culturais foram agregados à composição com o intuito de expressar a riqueza cultural do povo akan. O primeiro deles pode ser encontrado diretamente na paleta de cores, fazendo referência aos tons tipicamente presentes no kente, assim como ao brilho do ouro. Além disso, as formas retangulares e triangulares remetem aos padrões geométricos presentes nos tecidos.
Many cultural elements were introduced to the composition in order to express the cultural richness of the akan people. The first one can be seen directly in the colour pallet, which references both the typical shades present in the kente cloth and the shine of gold. Furthermore, the rectangular and triangular shapes allude the cloth’s geometric patterns.
A estrutura básica constitui-se por dois círculos perfeitos que possuem uma interseção no centro, a qual estabelece relação aos valores igualitários e à forte união do povo akan, assim como ao seu característico senso de justiça. Os oito retângulos vermelhos constituem a parte mais representativa da composição, representando as pernas de uma aranha, as quais simbolizam o modo de storytelling dos akans, o anansesem (contos da aranha, em português).
The basic structure is made of two perfect circles that intersect in the centre, which establishes a relation between the egalitarian values and the strong bond among the Akans, as well as their characteristic sense of justice. The eight red rectangles set up the most representative part of the composition: the legs of a spider, which symbolizes the Akan storytelling, the anansesem (spider tales, in English).
