Selection of Oil Paintings 2010-2012
My experience with literal theatrical stages has driven me to make paintings that incorporate the idea of performance and performance/exhibition spaces. I am fascinated by the notion of performance, by the concept of constructed, premeditated action designed for repetition, designed to convey deeper truths. I am intrigued by both the concept and the vision of actors frozen in a meticulously crafted arena.
I think of the spaces I depict in my paintings as strange stages, and of my figures as masked actors. My work attempts to capture a silent, intense, anticipatory moment―a pause in performance, a lack of action. The moment where the set and the props―the stage space― becomes encompassing and enveloping. The moment the actors find themselves imprisoned by the stage, the bizarre freakishness of their performance revealed.
