Inheritance

Our addiction to electricity was inherited from our forefathers, we had no choice but to start using electricity. From an early age weare thought to be dependent on electricity. Each generation becomes more dependentthan the one before them as the world moves away from a mechanical to a digitalera. As electricity passed on from one generation to the next just like genesare passed on. We inherit genes like, hair color and texture, eye color, bodyshape. We have no choice in what we inherited. Drug abusers pass theiraddiction on as well. One addict creates another addict through peer pressureand social circumstances. Our addiction to electricity is passed on from onegeneration to the next because of social standards. With human populationgrowing by the minute, so the need for electricity grows as well. Developingtechnology also demands a higher use of electricity. It is a never-ending growing organism, and wehave no choice but to adapt to what we inherited. In this photograph I havechosen a model with distinctive genetic features, like her red hair, matchingeyes and freckles. I have incorporated the red wire in her hair, as if theygrew out of her head naturally, to illustrate the electricity addiction that wehave inherited.

In Hong Kong people have become dependent on airconditioners because of rising temperatures. Temperatures rise because of theclosely built concrete buildings that restrict airflow through the city. HongKong has become physically addicted to air conditioning. It is a chainreaction, the more air conditions are used, the more they are needed. They arealso cut off from their environment because they are used to a cooler indoorstemperature and don’t want to spend time outside. The dependence on an airconditioner keeps you cooped up and restricts you from experiencing new things.

People become used to doing things inside and experience ofhow to survive outdoors is forgotten. A drug that is highly physicallyaddictive is Vicodin. Vicodin is a pain reliever and it makes you physicallycomfortable. Withdrawal symptoms are sweating, insomnia, agitation, nausea& muscle aches and cramps. The symptoms are much like the symptoms of heatstroke. As usage of Vicodin continues a tolerance is built up by the body andusage must then increase to maintain the same effect. It relates to airconditions because it is also physically addictive, relieves physicaldiscomfort and usage of it can lead to increased usage. In this photograph I have styled everythingin cool whites and greys to illustrate the idea of cool air given by air-cons.The headpiece and strict pose illustrates the restrictive life styles of thepeople who are dependent on air conditioning.
Light Me Up

The light bulb was one of the fundamental electricalappliances. Now we can’t go through a day without switching on a light. Without electrical lighting we would not beable to function as we today. We can nowfunction to full capacity during the day and night as we have light to ourdisposal all the time. The drug that can relate to this is cocaine. Cocainemakes you alert, think very clear and fast. While on cocaine you can functionfaster and more efficient. Light has also made people function faster and moreefficient, as seeing in dark places is no longer an issue. In this photograph Ihave styled everything in a clear white and incorporated the light bulbs in themodel’s hair to illustrate the idea of fast and clear functionality.
Phone Faced

Cell phones help people to communicate faster and moreefficient. We are always connected to other people as we get on to chat sites, like Whatsapp, Bbm and Facebook, to be more social. The irony is that when weare in the physical company of people, we chat to other people in the virtualworld on our phones. We cross an unseen line, from being social to beingunsocial because of the over use of our phones. This can be compared toAlcohol. Alcohol is also used to be more social but, alcoholics do not noticethe crossover from drinking alcohol to be social to becoming addicted toalcohol. Alcoholics tend to isolate themselves from society rather than beingsocial. This relates to the over use of cell phones as it causes people toisolate them selves from a physical society. Over use of alcohol and cell phonescauses us to isolate our selves from human socialization. In this photograph I have placed two modelsacross from each other at a table to illustrate a social setting, yetironically they are unable to communicate with each other as they are wearingmasks that block their eyes and mouths.

Feel the Beat

People become addicted to hearing music all the time throughradio, iPod’s and cd’s. Music affects our mood and is used to influence ourmood in shopping malls, restaurants, clothing stores, clubs and events. People have come to rely on music toinfluence their moods everyday, for example listening to a song that gets youexcited to go to work in the morning. Marijuana and Magic Mushrooms can relateto this as they both affect your mood. Marijuana heightens your mood, weatherit be happy, excited, scared or angry. Users of Marijuana and Mushrooms alsoreport enjoying music more when under the influence of these drugs. Colors alsobecome brighter when using Marijuana and Magic Mushrooms. Color has also beenproven to affect a person’s mood. In this photograph I have built a headpieceout of cd’s. In the reflections of the multi- colored cd’s I have reflected differentfacial expressions representing different moods. The function of this is toillustrate how digital music is relied on to influence our moods.

People tend to spend lots of time in front of the televisionto escape reality and relax. Televisions are an excellent method ofcommunication for advertising because it can split the message into audio andvisual. People have commented that theyfeel tired, hypnotized, brainwashed and like it sucks their energy.

“Television's mighty grasp on the eyeballs of the viewer ispartly due to the human body's inability to react to the transmittedprogramming. Images from the glowing, pulsing TV screen are simulating, howeverthe nature of the medium does not permit the body to respond appropriately. Thebody wants to react to the barrage of images, but cannot. This sensorydisorientation the TV watcher is visually and auditory simulated whileremaining physically passive confuses the mind. These conflicting messages andfeelings succeed in creating an almost hypnotic trance in the viewer.”

Hypnotics; Valium, Xanax, diazepam (anti-depressants) can becompared to TV addiction. These pills make you drowsy and helps you escapereality, but they impair motor skills. The body also builds up a tolerance to Xanax quickly and the dosage thenbecomes more and more to maintain the same effect. Track of time is lost whileon these pills. Heavy TV watchers alsolose track of how much time they spend in front of the TV and increase theamount of TV watching over time. Heavy TV watchers will opt out of socialevents, flick through channels, watch TV out of habit not interest, will beunfit and have poor diets. In this photograph I have portrayed a man who seemsto have lost track of time, does not function in a normal society any more andis unhealthy. The double exposures onthe photograph functions as support to the visual idea of losing track of time, being hypnotized and not thinking clearly.
Light Me Up

(Time laps video of Pretoria and Johannesburg area)

For the video Idecided to do a time laps of a busy city during night time, to show the amountof lights that are on and how busy people are even though the day hasended. Video ‘s pace keeps on increasinguntil everything becomes distorted. The distortion represents the results ofnot sleeping during the night and then possibly crashing, just like cocaineusers could die from sudden heart attacks because they don’t feel the need tosleep.
Heaven & Hell

(stop frame video)

Heaters are a comfort and a necessity. They could beessential to survival in some cases. A person’s body adapts quickly to the warmtemperature of a heater, and when the heat is taken away you feel extremelycold. This could be compared to heroin as a person’s body builds up a tolerancefor the drug quickly and then usage has to increase. Heroin is a drug used tomake you feel comfortable, relaxed, it eases pain and it numbs the senses.Heroin is used commonly by homeless people and prostitutes as it helps themfeel warm, safe and comfortable during cold nights. It is a drug that is usedfor personal reasons, such as the relief of emotional pain, and not for socialreasons like other drugs. It can literally alter a persons brain and way offunctioning, the same way in witch a heater can alter a person’s way offunctioning. A person’s whole life can start revolving around the addiction toheroin the same way in witch a person’s life can start revolving around heatersand keeping warm during the winter. For this video I have decided to do a stopframe video of a girl being consumed by pieces of heating blankets. The heatingblankets consuming the girl represents how your body can become used to and dependenton heaters. It also represents how yourbody becomes addicted to heroin and then is consumed by it.
