Proxy of the Subconscious Mind

DREAM JOURNAL
RESERCH AND SKETCHES
Our conscious mind thinks during the daytime and the subconscious mind works as we sleep. We might not recall our dreams every time we wake, but when we do, we notice the weirdness and randomness in them. This piqued my curiosity on how dreams work and how our brains create such images and situations in our dreams.

The project began from my interest in dreams and fantasies, so I began to note down a dream journal. From the journal, I noticed the relation of realities and dreams. Dreams are random expressions of the subconscious mind. We dream what we saw, heard, or been through in the waking life. There are studies about dreams by some psychiatrists, but there is still no proof for what dreams really are, where they come from, and what they actually made for.

Freud and Jung are two famous psychiatrists that have different theories of dream. From the research, Jung’s Compensatory Theory of Dreams, which claimed that dreams are created to compensate the life activity and being, is relatable to my own experiences. I compared the studies to my dream journal and found the similarities in them. There are three types of compensatory dreams, according to Jung; parallels, opposites, and satisfaction.

The project is a journal of Compensatory dreams as series of illustrations which fabricated the tree types of Compensatory dreams according to Jung. Different materials are used for each type; matte opaque surface for emphasizing, transparent
or see-through surface for satisfacetion, and reflecting surface for opposition. The illustrations were created by many different techniques to immitate the randomness of dreams.

From afar, the displaying is a big black box placing in the middle of a black space. As the audiences get closer to the work, the illustrated journal will be seen, scattered in the box. This idea is based on the sleeping stage. Our eyes see no light, only darkness, but our mind shines bright, going through memories and ideas we have, creating some weird pictures and stories.
