This was a pantomime comic that I produced for my comics major in RISD’s precollege program. Ty, my instructor, asked us to reinterpret the story of the tortoise and the hare. While revisiting the story, I realized that the tortoise was similar to my childhood self – determined to prove my potential to the world, while the hare resembles my current self; cocky, arrogant, and stubborn. Hence, I placed both versions of myself in a Mad Max-like universe, racing madly with one another. As this project is a large exploration of my own identity, the costumes are a blend of the Chinese PLA army uniform, and Western punk-rock leather jackets. I spent most of my childhood in China, hence the tortoise, or my younger self, has the standard PLA jacket, and my young adolescent self is more influenced by Western media, hence the leather jacket. When the tortoise wins at the end of the comic, it conveys my belief that -- one cannot forget their childhood self, nor their sense of modesty and ambition.
