Fall 2017
Type 1
Emily Rye
Specimen Book

I was assigned Verena Gerlach’s ‘FF Chambers Sans’ type. The typeface ‘FF Chambers Sans’ is a marriage of two styles that have polar opposite effects. The traditional serif engravings from a 1686 scientific book along with a generic sans serif style taken from letterings on enamel street signs. It is a successful experimentation done by the designer, synthesizing conflicting opposites to form a cooperative whole.

For consistency, the specimen book's color palette is kept the same as the specimen poster's. The vivid colors emphasize how a structurally stern looking typeface could be used in a playful light-hearted manner.
