As I turn to my own photography as source material on certain projects, I find that I still need to create imagined elements to set the mood and capture the emotional impact of the scene I see in my mind's eye. The transformation from the original photo of the Rouge River in southern Michigan below to the final composition above involved opening up the wooded environment to reveal a more distant vista. My inspiration came from the work of Oscar Droege and the steep mountain valleys of the Pacific northwest.
