MAGNETOWER

At 22nd of November the European Space Agency (ESA) has started the mission to study the Earth’s magnetic field. The SWARM constellation was successfully launched three satellites, which purpose was to gain new insights into the Earth system by improving our understanding of the Earth's interior and climate. One of the mission’s discovery was that Earth’s polarity is not constant. Unlike a classic bar magnet, the matter governing Earth’s magnetic field moves around. Geophysicists are almost sure that the reason Earth has a magnetic field is because its solid iron core is surrounded by a fluid coat of hot, liquid metal. The flow of liquid iron in Earth’s core creates electric current, which in turn creates the magnetic field.

The satellite data has revealed, that the Earth’s magnetic field is weakening much faster than previous research would suggest. These measurements show that on the whole, the planet’s geomagnetic field is weakening about ten times faster than expected, at a rate of 5% every decade. There are many threats of Earth’s magnetic field loss, such as compasses malfunction, magnetoreceptors of some animals and insects won’t work, aurora borealis disappearance, technology of satellites would be destroyed (no magnetosphere), cosmic rays could reach Earth’s surface and the most dangerous for all beings: planet’s atmosphere could be stripped away - the sun’s natural wind is so powerful, it can easily rip gasses out of a planet’s atmosphere - probably, this is what happened on Mars.
Each Tower is an 9 kilometers tall electromagnet with opposite poles depending on which Pole is it built. The core of both towers are designed as a huge electromagnet constantly supporting weakening Earth’s geomagnetic field. Core contains multiplied magnetic coils made of cupper. Outer shell of the building is made of reinforced ice. It is specific type of ice. To improve the strength parameters of ice is to mix ice with a substance, which will inhibit crack formation and propagation. This sort of reinforcement is usually mixed homogeneously and is called microscopic. The tests show that ice can be strengthened significantly by the addition of alluvium: silica sands, gravels coarse sands. The degree of strengthening has been proven to be dependent on both the type of and the amount of alluvium.
Additional support for the building inner shell contains nanosteel construction is inspired by the molecular structure arrangement of ice. Ordinary ice consists of two interpenetrating lattices with a hexagonal close packed stacking arrangement. The stacking arrangement is that of hexagonal close packing, but the molecules themselves are not close packed. It is possible to create structure like ordinary ice, but based on a cubic close packing arrangement.
Electromagnet of this size needs huge power supply facility. Towers are surrounded by a disk under which are located batteries accumulating energy produced by solar collectors placed on the surface. The innovative spherical solar panels is a matrix of tiny, spherical solar cells that are designed to absorb sunlight at any angle. This means not only more efficient energy production, but less power needed for motorization of solar cell frames. The design and geometry of spherical cells means that by harnessing reflected and indirect light, energy conversion is more efficient – a target far beyond flat photovoltaic technologies.
