Heirloom Series: Oil Bottle

The Heirloom series is a collection of kitchenware/accessories inspired by the natural forms of 'heirloom' tomatoes. These designs have been developed and explored using a combination of 3D modelling in SolidWorks and Rhino software, hand drawing/rendering, 3D printing and model making with cardboard and plasticine
Slightly more delicate in form and material, theoil bottle of the tomato series is intended to provide balance to its heftycousins, the platter and salt & pepper shakers. Made of thick borosilicateglass (can withstand temperature fluctuations and is shatter resistant), itstill has physical weight to it, but its elongated forms suggest fluidity andthe effect of gravity on a malleable form and invites interaction.
Its exaggerated bulb-like base invites cuppingin ones hands and the dynamic grooves/segments provide the fingers tractionwhen pouring. The ‘Olio Versatore’ is perhaps more pear-like than tomato-like,which can be seen to accentuate its feminine feel. The form is distorted andexaggerated enough though to hint at the unusual or slightly uncanny, broughttogether by the more representational design of the stainless steel pouringspout- quite clearly the fruits ‘stem’.
Rapid prototype, low resolution (.5mm layer thickness). Almost 1:1 scale, approx 90% of intended size.
Hand renders using copic markers, chalk, liquid paper, white gel pen and fine liner.
Design variations, including split and basket versions.
