Door gods or "Menshen" in Chinese are divine guardians of doors and gates in Chinese folk culture. By displaying the images of Menshen on the door, they can protect against evil influences or to encourage the entrance of positive ones. And it creates a sacred power around the house as if someone supernatural is guarding it.
