B Tech Graphic Design - Research Project

Research Project for my
B Tech in Graphic Design

Publication title : Sensory Processing Guide
Audience : Parents

This is how my Sensory Kit Project was displayed at our graduate exhibition for the School of Music, Art and Design (SoMAD).

The lid of the Sensory Kit was painted yellow to make it more vibrant and fun.

The words, "Sensory Kit" was engraved into the lid to demonstrate the tactile quality of the wood. The font used on the lid was created as part of my project in an attempt to engage the audience with the content through the application of typography. The Sensory Font illustrates the human senses, which when used in the context of the publication, engages the parents with the content.

Abstract

Designing a multisensory publication for use by parents as an informative guide on the Sensory Processing Disorder.
The aim of this study was to produce a multisensory publication about the Sensory Processing Disorder in children aged 5-10. The outcome will determine how a multisensory publication will advance the knowledge of parents on the topic.

The first step was to identify if parents would find a publication on the Sensory Processing Disorder to be a helpful source and to establish how a multisensory publication, which engages the senses, would feel and look like while basing the publication on existing research. The purpose of the study was to demonstrate how a multisensory publication on the Sensory Processing Disorder in children aged 5-10 can be a helpful source to parents, while also demonstrating the importance of designing for multiple senses. The practical aspect specifically focuses on approaching the disorder through multisensory design in a publication space. A sensory kit, consisting of the publication and sensory items, was created for the parents to interact with while they navigate through the complex disorder.

The purpose of the design approach is to urge the audience to touch, smell, hear, taste and see what is presented to them. The intention of the research project was to demonstrate that designing for multiple senses engages the audience on a deeper level.

This is a mock-up design of the publication as well as photographs of some of the pages.
