What a deep midnight and what blue sky!

Like a plate full of blueberry jam.

It’s the warmest day of spring.

With the starlight, everything in the Tree Street has fallen asleep.

But little crow Kafka fails to get asleep, staring here and there.

Kafka has a candy in he’s mouth, which was given by Dilys.

Kafka promised that he would keep it till the next day.

And now, the candy begins to melt slowly… so sweet!

Everything is becoming sweet – his tongue, the bed sheet, the pillow, the lamp, 

as well as the window curtain,

Even the moon has changed – into a sweet cream cake.

“What is Dilys doing now?

She should probably have gone to sleep”

”What are Mum and Dad doing?”

Mum said that kids should never enter adults’ bedroom without permission,

especially when adults are sleeping.

Kafka closes the door gently.

What is KK and MM doing now? “KK! MM!”

Kafka arrived at his neighbor – Aunt Aunt Donny’s house.

Oh, the two buddies are sleeping soundly.

The world is so small. The mountain draws a gray wavy curve in distance.

It looks like a vast glittering sea, seemingly limitless in extend.

He tries to sleep in a vase, like a rose.

He tries to sleep on the bookshelf, like a book.

He tries to sleep while hanging from the ceiling, like a light.

He tries to sleep inside a pumpkin, like a pumpkin seed.

He tries to sleep behind the door, like a broom.

He tries to sleep in a hole, like a mouse.

He tries to sleep while hanging on a tree, like a bat.

He tries to sleep in a pond, like a fish.

He tries to sleep on a lotus leaf, like a frog.

Who can help me to get asleep?!!!

However hard he tries, Kafka is not able to sleep …at all!

It is just like one is expecting something that is about to happen, 

while it takes too long to come. Kafka is frustrated very much.

Turning over and over again, Kafka decides to go to #1001, Tree Street.

There lives a wise old man.

“What is Uncle T doing then?”

“Don’t worry, Kafka!” 

Uncle T has the cure!

 “There is a recipe for your insomnia.”

“A recipe?”

“It’s a sandman. Follow my words and you can soon fall asleep.”

Uncle T whispers to Kafka a few words.

“Have you learned it by heart?”

“Yes! Yes!” Kafka nods his head.

“It’s a sandman. Follow my words and you can soon fall asleep.”

Uncle T whispers to Kafka a few words.

“Have you learned it by heart?”

“Yes! Yes!” Kafka nods his head.​​​​​​​

With wind roaring by his ears and the shadow of the trees falling back, 

Kafka runs all his way home.

Just for a while, he is out of breath.

Running home makes him exhausted. Kafka wants to fly back instead.

However, he remembers Uncle T’s words:”Do follow my words, or it won’t workt!”

“All right, just hold on!”Kafka encourages himself and makes his way as quickly as possible until he hears nothing but his heartbeats. 

Kafka gets home finally.

“It is the first time I ran home from #1001, and it will be the last time!”

“Run home from here…without stopping…then…put the small bag beside your pillow.

Breathe in, breathe out, for once

Breathe in, breathe out, for twice

Breathe in, breathe out, for the third time...”

Kafka feels as if his body becomes soft, and the sandman climbs into one of his nostril.

“Breathe in, breath out, for the fifth time…Breath in, breathe…”

Counting to the sixth time, Kafka falls asleep.

Good night, the stars!
