Museum extension in Finland

COMPETITION FOR AN EXTENSION BETWEEN THE ALVAR AALTO MUSEUM AND THE MUSEUM OF CENTRAL FINLAND
The proposed extension, located between the two existing museums, seeks to highlight the existing pond and the green zone. A new pedestrian street next to the pond, joins the existing square with the new entry to the museums. A bench is placed next to the pond so that people can enjoy the place.
The new facade, follows the rhythm of existing facades, to integrate in the surroundings and to be respectful of the work of Alvar Aalto. The new volume has a similar height of existing buildings. The new main facade, is made with glass, so the new entry and shop are full with natural light and are in contact with the outside.
The new entrance and lobby is placed at the height of the ground floor of the Museum of Central Finland. A staircase leads up to the store located on the first floor that connects directly with the top floor Alvar Aalto Museum. From the new lobby another staircase leads down to the storage space for the exhibition materials and the technical room. This floor is placed at the height of the ground floor of the Alvar Aalto Museum, and the new building connects directly to the cafeteria. The new elevator in the lobby connects the three floors so the museum is accessible to all audiences.
