This project was to design for a specific market, brand and opportunity. The Alexander Wang Chair is a lounge sling chair designed for the high fashion brand Alexander Wang. This project is not a collaboration with Alexander Wang.
Alexander Wang is a high fashion brand created by the designer Alexander Wang. It is known for its laid back style and off-duty model look. Their products are priced at a higher level and are target at young people who are interested in fashion with an above average income. Besides apparel, bags and accessories, Alexander Wang has shown extensive interest in collaborating with other industries or brands for other products, including furniture.
The fashion industry has shown interest in the furniture industry. High fashion brands such as Louis Vuitton, Marni, Gucci and Moschino have released their furniture collaborations in the past. Fashion designer Raf Simons has also launched his own furniture series.
Therefore, I identified an opportunity for Alexander Wang to add a piece of furniture to their collection.
My design process started with building scale model and full size comfort models. The original idea was to incorporate the element of chain links used in Alexander Wang's collection. However, after extensive mockups and user testing, I decided to move away from it based on the feedback.
The frame of the final model is made of a steel tubing frame welded and brazed together. The frame is constructed with two profile bends and five stretchers; it is finished with carbon black spray paint. The pillow is made of genuine leather, attached to the frame with a zipper connection.
The leather pillow is detachable, featuring tabs with zipper detail on each side. The cushion fill can be removed for easy cleaning and refurnishing .
