Candle Dancer / A New Way to Swing

Candle Dancer is a wireframe style candle holder that utilize the concept of counterweight.

Candle holder has always been given the impression of being an object. Yes, one the design specifications of candle holder should be standing firmly on the table and further eliminate the risk of tipping over while the candle is lit. However, standing firmly does not necessarily require a chunk of metal to be the base. Why not make something looks unstable but actually stable enough to be a candle holder? This is the challenge of this design project.

As the designer would like to add instability into the stable structure, Alexander Calder’s work came through the mind. The designer went to Whitney Museum of American Art to check out the current exhibition Calder: Hyper Mobility in order to gain some insights.
Caler’s work is very interesting. He utilizes the concept of balance in almost all aspects of his work. Also, the overall style of Calder’s work is quite simple with straight lines and functional curves. The take away from his work is that balanced structure can be presented in an unbalanced way

Beginning

The idea of Candle Dancer came from a dinner between the designer and his girlfriend. They were talking about product design ideas while they were waiting for dinner to be served in a Korean restaurant. They were talking about how to make a product more interesting through designing the product with an inner-controversial approach. For example, designing a product that has a feature that normally does not see in this product. Such approach would refresh user-experience dramatically due to the contrast. At that moment, the designer came up with the Candle Dancer idea and decide to develop further
