SEAMLESS PATTERN
leaves, leaves, leaves
Continuing my studies at Arkansas State University, I was assigned to create a seamless pattern in my Digital Illustration course. The pattern needed to create movement, flow seamlessly, and be creative.
As almost always, I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do right off hand, so I sketched and doodled and got online and did research. After realizing fall was just around the corner, I decided to go organic and do leaves. I love everything about fall: the color, weather, the beauty. Maple leaves are the most well-known "fall leaf".
Here are a few of the main images I used as inspiration as well as the pattern with my color scheme:

To recreate these beautiful creations, I placed these images in illustrator. Using the pencil tool, I started drawing until I came up with a form that resembled a leaf. After that, I took the direct select tool and tweaked it ever-so-slightly. Just enough that I maybe, just maybe, had an actual leaf. (Which on the bright side, isn't as particular since it's an organic shape--yay!) From there I created veins, grouped the veins, and then copied it three times. From here I selected each leaf individually, took the eyedropper tool, and selected a color from the third image above. Continuing my process, I simply played around with creating my pattern on a 5x5 square. The main Illustrator tools I used were the move tool and the copy/paste shortcuts.
When I was satisfied with how it looked, I uploaded it to Spoonflower.com. Check out my profile and get my design here:
After they delivered by unique fabric, I knew I didn't want to go the traditional route of creating a pillow or just staging the fabric tastefully. So I pushed myself to create a circle-square skirt--I even layered it. I've never been trained to use a sewing machine and haven't touched one in at least two years. Below is how this turned out, plus the main video I found on Youtube that helped me make the skirt.
What do you think? How did it turn out? Let me know in the comments below!
Until next time friends,
-K

Ps-- some exciting projects coming up. So be on the lookout! :)
