Ceramic Wall Planter

This brief was a relatively open brief, however, it did have a couple of twists added to it. Before i get into all the details, the brief stipulated that I had to create a ceramic wall planter from the conceptual phase all the way through into a once off manufacture of the planter. The aim was to introduce batch production and how it is utilized in the ceramic world.

Some such twists were that the wall planter had to take into account were the fact that it had to be designed for a specific plant. The plant that i was designated was the cacti lithops. I hope that you will be able to notice the corelation between the plant and the wall planter

I started out by concept sketching and ended up with the few, minor variations of the same idea. For the sake of strength and not wanting to draw attention from the very simple plant, I decided to opt for the more simple and least extravagant choice.
Next, I put my ceramic skills to the test. I made my master from high density polyurethane which i coated in fiberglass. Next I made a two part mould from plaster of paris. Once that had dried I opted to use stoneware casting slip due to its 'easy to work with' properties in comparison to other slip types. The piece released from the mould with ease and once dried went of for a bisque fire. I finished it off with a bubble technique of which I used the blue colour. Once that had dried, I coated it with a layer of clear underglaze and fired it. This is what came of all the hard work
