Don Ichino's profile

Shenergy, Shanghai, China with KMD Architects

Public architecture has historically assumed primacy as the most worthy and durable marks of man. Indeed, a government building can assume symbolic importance independent of the work itself by way of its extended relationship to historical record, a building type that provides enduring commentary on the values and beliefs of the society that built it.
Shenergy is a government funded energy company in Shanghai, PRC, the first listed company in the electric power and energy sector. As a government building, the Shenergy Headquarters must express permanence and stability. The three companies that constitute Shenergy will each occupy two floors. Executive levels will occupy the top three floors of the building.
A courtyard typology has been adopted and offers functional and processional advantages. Optimal natural light will be admitted to all public, meeting and office spaces. The courtyard offers a distinguished processional space for staff and visitors arriving as pedestrians or passengers.
