IMÁGENES MÁGICAS DE MOVIMIENTO
Scanimations Book
FLAAR Mesoamérica - Mayan Toons
Design
Bottom ant illustration on the cover was made by Vivian Diaz.
The book design and idea was based on the original scanimations book by Colin Ord: Magic Moving Images.
This book was intended for educational purposes. Flaar Mesoamérica and MayanToons work with different Guatemalan designers who create innovative materials to teach about Central American flora and fauna to promote conservation.
With the help of donations they create more books and comics to help local schools to teach about plants and animals in Spanish, English and other Mayan languages.
Mock-ups

Diagramation and design was made by yours truly.
Inside Pages
These are some other images you can find in the book, most of them are animals but you can also see some plants. Next to them is a small, but very informative, fact about each of them.

In a Scanimation a sequence of movement is silhouetted and piled up in a way were, after being cut with a grid, the motion looks fluent. Some of the illustrations were made by different FLAAR co-workers and put up together and cut by myself. The process, if done right is actually very simple. The tricky part is to get the sequences correctly.
Animations
This is how some of the scanimations look when a clear acetate with a grid moves on top of the silhouettes.
