Three Dimensional Projection (2017)

Projections are characterized by their translucency and lack of mass. Using a handmade camera obscura, I captured the projection of a landscape in a three dimensional medium. I started by replicating the projected image by building clay onto a 6” x 6” screen within the camera.
I then replicated the mirror image of the projection on a second screen using the same clay technique. These screens were glued to opposite sides of a weighted 6"x6" cube. The other faces of the cube were covered with clay as if to suggest that the entire cube was one solid projected image extended for 6".
Typically, the colors of light projected by a camera obscura will pass over onto any object or screen placed beneath. Now, the solid cube of projection has been given its own form to become a solid entity. In this sense "Three Dimensional Projection" is the opposite of the translucent light that it began as.
