Original inspiration sketches
Inspired by the carnivorous pitcher plant (specifically the genus Sarracenia), I created a garment using the components of the organism as a basis for how the piece would be created. Firstly, I analyzed and studied the forms of the plant and it's various patterns. Through understanding these elements came inspiration for the construction and shape of the top. The off the shoulder neckline was inspired by the peristome (round opening at the top of the plant) where the prey land, and consequently slip and fall into the tube structure. The bell sleeves were inspired by the flowing nature of the operculum. Contrasting from the peristome, as one section is structured and the other flowing, I mimicked this quality within the apparel piece. So, as the sleeves attach to the bodice so does the operculum to the peristome.
