A few years ago, my graphic design class at Rhode Island College welcomed a couple of visitors from a local grassroots organization called Healthy Kids RI, which promotes age-appropriate sex education in Rhode Island public schools. The reason for their visit was to educate us in what they do and to announce that they were starting a contest to find the perfect brand identity for their organization. The purpose behind the brand identity I designed, was to convey a sense of child-like innocence, warmth and safety. I felt that such a controversial subject as sex education needed to be presented in a non-threatening manner. For this reason, I chose natural subjects, and depicted them in a style that I hoped would remind parents and teachers of children’s drawings, while at the same time, not being overly simplistic or playful. Unfortunately, I didn't win the contest but I had fun trying, plus I learned about the challenges of trying to design the perfect look for clients with discriminating tastes. Below are some very early logo ideas, various hand-drawn sketches and the final designs I submitted for judging.
