from time | a flash thrive piece

flash thrive is a zine by and for local creatives, started by Rosemarie Alejandrino and Charisse Celestial. In January 2016, flash thrive published its first issue: in love alone, which celebrated love in all of its different forms. Over the past year and a half, we've continued to thrive both physically and digitally, producing several mini zines, tabling at Bay Area zine fests, and even seeing a print run of our inaugural issue.

We said we wouldn't do it. But we did.

flash thrive issue 2: the drive home is a zine about place, and the places we leave behind in order to get to where we need to go. because we're always moving but we don't always know what we're moving towards.

My piece, from time, is a collage series that combines a few of my favorite things: the 1960s aesthetic, music, and the sounds and views from the passenger seat. It incorporates an amalgamation of imagery and art styles, meant to draw parallels between the spirit of the 1967 Summer of Love in San Francisco and today's Electric Daisy Carnival, which takes place every year in the Las Vegas desert.

To bridge the 50 year gap, from time combines imagery from both events as well as features the phrase I'LL GO EVERY WHEN YOU GO, which is made up of fragments from iconic album covers from 1967 and 2017. The web version of the piece is also an animated gif with flashing colors and falling daisy petals, which adds a modern and technological twist to an otherwise psychedelic 60s-inspired art style.
