Gestalt: an organized whole that is perceived as more than the sum of its parts.

For this project, we were asked to digitally illustrate an image that is many different things put together to create a bigger whole. Using the concept of life versus death I decided to construct an hourglass.

The 'life' half of the hourglass includes symbols such as shifting gears, plant life, and ribbon-like ornamentation. A figure of a young woman holding a clock sits to the right of the falling sand.

The sands begin to become bones as they enter the 'death' half of the composition. The vines turn to barbed wire and the hourglasses structure changes to melting candles and bones. The young woman holding the clock in now a skeleton to further push to idea of nothing being able to escape time.
