Moby Dick is a book written by Herman Melville in 1851. A book is a story about giant white whale, so the decision was to embody him in a form of a white big book.
The goal was to create a classic, but modern looking book.

After reading the novel I separated it on two types of chapters: narrative (the main story) and non-narrative. There are chapters that include lots of facts about whales, whaling and sea. While reading I've noticed that sometimes it is hard to read the book with all these descriptions, to understand them and it's easy to forget the plot of the story. They reminded me more about encyclopedia articles. I’ve looked for different encyclopedias and noticed that often designers use for them sans serif fonts. So the decision was to separate chapters by using different fonts.

I decided to use sans serif and serif fonts together, so it will be two books inside of the one. Different fonts can create a contrast look, but I wanted fonts to look organically together. So I was searching for font family, which contains both serif and sans serif letters. The choice was FF Scala, as it looks quite modern, and that was the feeling that I wanted.

As the novel has two types of text, chapters also have different enumerating: sans serif chapters have numbers, and serif chapters are enumerated with letters.

Text looks better with wide margins and they are used for engravings and footnotes. Engravings were made by Rockwell Kent in 1930. Their location on margins makes them look modern and not interrupt a reader from the text.

On the front of the cover is located the embossing of silver whale, as I wanted to create a quick understanding about the book from visual point of view. Showing the title of the book through the form, whale on the big white book, Moby Dick. I wanted to create an association with ocean, a reference to habitat of whales, I chose blue endpaper and same color fore edge to create a single structure, white and blue, like water and sea foam.
