This brooch is made to commemorate Liu Xiaobo and his effort and struggle for the advancement of human rights in China. The body of the brooch resembles traditional Chinese thread-bound book, referring to Character 08 and the old and obsolete thinking of government always above the people. The top and bottom of the book are held together and supported by eight bars, alluding to the fact that Liu Xiaobo is still in prison. The left side of the book metamorphoses into two wings, symbolizing the struggle for freedom and human rights is initiated by Character 08 and will eventually triumph. Two of the eight bars are broken from the book, signifying that the struggle, although happening, is still in progress.
