Independent Study in Knife Forging

This is a preview of the final research paper for my senior design class at the University of Michigan College of Engineering.

Abstract: Skin is vital to the functions of the human body and has its own set of mechanical properties and by quantifying these properties, we may discover vital variances in the condition of skin with age. As of now, there are several methods to test for these properties but most have been inconclusive. The objective of this project is to develop a device that will accurately measure the age-related viscoelastic properties of skin biopsy samples, which will be accomplished utilizing ultrasound technology. The results of testing using this apparatus may provide key information indicative of the degradation of collagen in the dermal layer of skin with aging.
