UTZON AMPLIFIER - Passive Smartphone Speaker

Utzon Amplifier - Opera House Souvenir
The Utzon Amplifier is an acoustic speaker designed to passively amplify and direct audio from a smartphone. This product is one of a range of three souvenirs inspired by the Sydney Opera House and it's architect, Jørn Utzon. The range is intended for sale in the Opera House Gift Department.

This design uses the principles of horn speakers, meaning no electronics or power are required for audio amplification.

The simplicity of the Utzon Amplifier's design will allow for it to be manufactured from an ever-expanding range of colours and materials.

A device-agnostic design allows for the speaker to be used with any device with a bottom or side orientated speaker.

This product was inspired by Jørn Utzon's original concepts for pristine acoustic amplification within the Opera House's Concert Hall.

DESIGN IDEATION
Initial concept sketch for the acoustic speaker.

Original proof of concept model, created using modelling clay. Even with a basic shape, this design succeeded in directing and amplifying music.

Cardboard sketch models were used to design and refine the shape of the Utzon Amplifier.

Dimensioned drawings developed from the sketch models, used for CAD modelling.

Products developed and modelled in Rhino.

The first 3D printed prototypes of the Utzon Amplifier.
