Adobe Life Swatches: A City's Secrets

This project is a hypothetical poster series for the Adobe brand as a part of an advertising campaign called Adobe: Life Swatches. This is where we had to create a series of three posters that explore colour, pattern and the elements and principles of design through a specific social theme. This is a first year project comprising of a pattern, mixed media and photo manipulation poster. The theme is the beauty and the current state of ruin of the old structures throughout Johannesburg. The target audience for this series is historians, architects and architecture aficionados. They would appreciate the history and character in these buildings and understand their significance. The colour schemes are muted and subdued shades of beige, red, and faded blues and greens. Expressing their aged quality and strong history. The mixed media poster “Fading History” also represents the loss of history in the city. As the building slowly fades and disappears into the distance. While the photo manipulation poster “Revered and Forsaken” shows the disparity in the upkeep of these buildings. Johannesburg City Hall is well maintained and stands tall and proud against the glass and steel giants surrounding it. Whereas the Lissik Street Post Office just across the street from it is dilapidated and derelict. Within the poster this is shown with how City Halls looms above and overpowers the broken structure of the Post Office almost buried underneath. The pattern poster “Dissipating Character” comprises of small vectors of the various organic and geometric shapes and structures. It slowly dissolves to nothing, representing how the character of the city is disappearing among high rises and sky scrapers. In this series of posters I hope to inspire change, to bring life back to the ruined history within Johannesburg.
