Wooden Dragon Automaton

I created this project to aid Coventry in their City of Culture application. I found that supposedly Saint George the Dragon Slayer was born in Coventry so I based my project around the Dragon because I thought things abut St. George might be a little over used. I made a small cardboard model to start with so I could get the basic shape and design of the Dragon. I then scanned the cardboard pieces and drew up the designs on Adobe Illustrator. Once I had all the pieces I then made a foam board model so I knew all the measurements were correct. The design was then cut out onto MDF using a Laser Cutter. When my practice MDF model was built I went back to my designs to make some adjustments for the final model.
The wings of he Dragon flap using an Ornithopter mechanism. I chose this method of movement because I was able to make the Dragons wings flap on two points making the wing flap more fluid.
