In the middle of the southern topography of Senegal, Tanaf village exists. Where the society is multi-denominational. Where a large piece of land is transected by the single main street, is where the project is intended to be. With a continuous motion, and a sunny climate all year-round. In a site like this, among an interconnected society, our vision is to create a social space where people, and their different believes interfuse. To create such experience, the first of its kind in the region, we had to create a landmark to be known by. We designed a wooden vertical element that is carefully located to be visible from all sides. Moreover, this element is structural and is considered as the main entrance. When you go across it, you enter the main social space that is wide and flexible to fit several activities with continues visual connection to the outside. Besides a library that provides knowledge to the local community. This social space can serve the village in several ways, and connects directly to the spiritual space -which is in the first floor- by a ramp, open to all society members. A smooth vertical path, that blurs the lines between the indoor and the outdoor, the ground and the first levels. When you reach the spiritual space, everything changes dramatically. Where you find calmness in an open -column free- space. With a dazzling shadow play, and a quieter, more private atmosphere. Our vision goes further to help the community and keep their identity powerful. Most of the building is cladded by a perforated skin representing a pattern inspired from the traditional Senegalese handmade carpets. This screen allows natural light and ventilation of the building. Additionally, we provided rain water collecting system with a capacity of 103000 liters, 2000 liters more than the annual rain average in August -the highest annual rain average-. Furthermore, our Place of Worship is designed to be built by local natural materials and construction methods. To sum up, John Portman once said that “Buildings should serve people”. That’s exactly what our building does. By creating new spiritual space, gathering people, providing knowledge sources and designing a space that serve all the religious. In a project that combines the spiritual experience and the practical benefits to the community.
