OBJECTS OF DESIRE - This project is all about objects and making a garment completely out of that said object. My object of desire that I was given was plastic cups.

I began this project by initially creating some moodboards of plastic cups and plastic cup fashion. I then went on to playing around with plastic cups, making shapes and heat pressing them to see the outcomes. After a few pages of this I then created two mind maps, a plastic cup (generalised) mind map and initial ideas mind map. These initial processes allow me to get my ideas onto paper and create more ideas spontaneously by looking at these.
My partner and I decided that we wanted to make festival wear of some kind. This complemented our object of desire as plastic cups are water resistant which matches festival typed clothing. Further into the project we knew that we wanted to create a bralet and poncho, this later changed to a bralet and skirt further down the line as we found it increasingly difficult to continue to heat press to poncho sides together, this was slowly destroying all of our hard work wed put into the poncho as it was becoming unfixable. This was when our decision to make it into a skirt occurred and this outcome was much better than the poncho as the skirt with the bralet became part of an outfit together.
I researched a lot into trashion, this helped me understand and to be inspired by the natural look of the object. For example we wanted to spray paint our cups so that our garment was bright coloured, much like you’d expect to see at a festival. Instead trashion showed me that keeping the natural features of the object isn’t such a bad thing and this also helps the audience to realise that the object we used was in fact plastic cups. I also researched into Jean Paul Gautier, this artist created the famous iconic Madonna bra, this outfit was inspiring to us as the bra looked like cone cups. This artist research inspired us to use the natural elements of the object too.
Below is the final outcome of the bralet and skirt. Fully made from the top rim and bases of the plastic cups. The flower on the front of the bralet was made by hot glue gunning strips of cup from the sides of the cup round back onto the base of the cup, creating a flower. We used ribbon to attach the final side of the skirt together, this added some colour and allows the skirt to be adjustable.
Below are my final two poster outcomes.
