This was an unusual project. A client asked us to visualize his organization's project planning, vetting, and approval process, which he was tasked to improve. The visualization was purely presentational, and not meant to be part of a UI.

Early in the project, the visualization was shaping up to be a set of columns representing phases of approval, and circles representing the projects themselves. Circle color was a function of project type, and the size of the circles grew as the project progressed. Sometimes, projects were cancelled, and they would drop out of the their current column.

The client, an avid poker player, suggested using poker chips instead of circles. This was not only memorable, but reinforced the idea that potential projects were "gambles," and his systemic improvements would yield less risky results.
An early version.  The slider at the bottom marks the passage of time in the visualization.
Later version. If a poker chip makes to the final stage (successful product launch), the poker chips transform into product containers.
