Ethical Boundaries of Contemporary Art

This thesis project is focused on ethical boundaries in contemporary transgressive art. In my research I was exploring the idea that so much of contemporary art is about pushing the boundaries and shocking people — but there's a significant grey area for how far is too far. The project contains three soft-bound books focused on three different topics within the overarching idea. The housing is an envelope which folds out to a poster, showing an index of all the artwork being displayed in the three books.
Exposed is focused on artists who reveal so much of themselves in their work that it's considered inappropriate or vulgar to some viewers. The book is printed entirely on translucent paper, and the information is revolving around one central point of the book. It slowly reveals a nude woman on the last page on a clear vinyl sheet.
Disturbed is focused on works that are physically uncomfortable to look at. This book explores multiple artists who use shock and disgust to make the viewer uncomfortable and address things within themselves that they don't want to address. The pages are french folded and in the first section all of the imagery lies within the folds, so you have to open them to reveal the artwork. In the second section, which is more about visceral shock factor, the images move to the main spread and the type lies within the folds.
Exploited is centered on one work of art: Myra by Marcus Harvey.  In order to understand the controversial nature of the work, the audience must have the backstory on Myra Hindley — a serial murderer whose image was popularized in the 1960s. This book explores the murders of five children that were committed by Myra and her boyfriend while looking into Harvey and the purpose behind his work. Whenever Myra's photo is shown, her face is blocked out in some way, as the intention of the book is not to glorify her image more than it already has been. The first time you see her face is in the painting on the last spread of the book.
