The harmony of the world is manifest in form and number; the heart and soul and all the poetry of natural philosophy are embodied in the concept of mathematical beauty’. Dárcy Thompson
‘Just as in nature, systems of order govern the growth and structure of animate and inanimate matter, so human activity itself has, since the earliest times, been distinguished by the quest for order… The desire to bring order to the bewildering confusion of appearances reflects a deep human need.’ Josef Müller-Brockmann
One of the core elements of interior design practice is mastering geometry, proportion, and composition. Students will commence with the exploration of surface geometry within the context of a wall mural and then move onto investigating the role of geometry in sculpting form and space. Mastering design elements and principles will introduce the language of interior design practice where the column, beams, walls/floors are composed to sculpt form and space. Understanding and manipulation of geometry in both 2 and 3 dimensions are the focus of this work.
The final goal of this project will be to critically engage a variety of design elements and principles to create a wall mural within a set of given parameters while providing evidence of your own creative process.

The feeling this mural is meant to evoke is the feeling of movement. The lines are meant to make the wall feel as if it is moving horizontally in each direction like the rhythm of a set of waves as they touch down at the edge of a lake. By layering and overlapping the materials the illusion of depth is created with the paper. Repetition is created and seen when grouping horizontal layers that are raised and lowered so the viewer is able to see different levels as they move from position to another. This mural is meant to give a feeling of calmness because of the simplicity and scale of the design. It is not meant to overwhelm the viewer but they are supposed to feel surrounded by it. The feeling of movement is felt when the viewer is walking along the mural and the lines are changing giving a dynamic sense of transformation. If this mural was made it would be crafted using steel sheets bent so they would mimic this same movement and lights would be added to the back so that they would shine down on other pieces it would also be placed infant of a large window so together these sources of light would make big oval and waving shadows to continue this feeling of movement.
