Patterns inspired by William Morris

William Morris (24 March 1834 - 3 October 1896) was an English textile designer, artist, writer, and socialist associated with the English Arts and Crafts Movement. William Morris is best known for his pattern designs which look to nature for their inspiration.

The intricate detailing of his prints and their extremely well-balanced colour scheme was a source of inspiration for me. I was fascinated by the complexity of the repeat and the use of multiple motifs, which I have tried to incorporate into my patterns.

The process of experimentation involved tracing out a small asymmetric portion of his prints to understand the style. This was followed by free-hand sketching to complete the pattern, which was, in turn, inked and painted either digitally or using watercolour. The frames thus created were then repeated to form a composition.
