Children's concept book: Charlie the duckling

College Majors Requirement: Writing for picture books

One of my favorite classes by far. We were offered this course as a Fine Arts Elective and I enjoyed it so much. This 24-page concept book about colors for children is inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's "The Ugly Duckling." It also has an underlying theme about family and seeing the brighter side of things.

Full Story:
Charlie the duckling loves colors. He talks about them every day. He thinks all colors are pretty, except the color grey.

His siblings are yellow, all fluffy and bright. The animals love them, they are a cute sight.

When Charlie comes to play with them, the animals will stare, then they make fun of him, “look out!” “Oh my!” “beware!”

“Here comes the ugly duckling, his feathers strange and grey. He looks so very dirty.” is what they always say. Charlie feels sad as he slowly walks away. “All colors can be lovable, but what about grey?”

Red flowers are wonderful, and so are yellow bees. He also likes the green grass that tickles at his knees.  He loves the cool blue pond, and the purple plums from trees, and don’t forget the orange leaves that dance with the breeze.

When mama comes to see him, to keep him company, he asks if there is something nice that’s grey that she can see. There are many other animals that come in shades of grey: the great owl, the snake, and the graceful manta ray.

“Grey is very special, mysterious and new. Just like the storm clouds that bring us rain and dew.” “I love the color grey; that much is true. But my favorite one of all is my special boy, that’s you.”
