The quilts made by Gee’s Bend design are unique compared to the traditional quilts. The quilts available regularly are harmonious, uniform, with precise patchwork, however, the patchwork in Gee’s Bend design is improvised and original, with no one quilt similar to next. Most of them start with a basic form, however, each one can end up with an unexpected pattern, unusual color, and surprising rhythm. Like traditional quilts, the patches are repeated, but with extreme improvisation.
In attempt to replicate the artwork of quilt designers at Gee’s Bend, I used the fabric available to me. Even though the fabric was recycled between different makeshift quilt pieces, each product that was created was diverse and could stand on its own. I can only imagine after my experience in replicating their art, the process of creating Gee’s Bend pieces of art is filled with designer’s personality, giving way to rich memories, and tradition, making each piece a valuable heirloom for the generations to come.
