Dramatic Restaging of the Iway Bridge Float

  • Providence’s urban fabric is largely defined by the vestigal marks of its highway infrastructure, which was relocated over the course of several years. The cornerstone of this process was the erection of the Providence River Bridge, which was first assembled off-site and then floated across the river to its final installation site at the mouth of the Providence river, a midpoint between Providence’s Jewlery District and Fox Point neighborhoods. This installation environment stands as a makeshift monument to this structure that asks viewers to contemplate whether Providence’s neighborhoods have been reunited by the city’s efforts to mend its once devided fabric. Cast, pigmented plaster, steel, ratchet straps, hand-drawn animation projected with audio, remixed text sourced from the Providence Department of Transportation. 2017.
