Gaudy is Good

  • Midwestern aesthetics are made up of gaudy forms taken from different cultures and styles thrown together into an idea of "tradition". This tradition longs for the early 1900s and advocates for christian nuclear families. Queer culture is driven underground in almost every aspect of life in this tradition. This series looks to claim some of these typically midwestern pieces and transform them into something queer. The work has been a process of blending a gaudy and energetic painting style into these stereotypically midwestern forms.
