Thomas “Tom” Tate has overseen activities at Tate Builders, Inc., in Martha’s Vineyard for more than three decades. As president and owner, Thomas E. Tate is responsible for managing all aspects of the company’s design and build operations.
The Tate Builders custom build and design team translates unique homeowner ideas into visually impressive, livable houses. A build project located adjacent to the Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, for example, was specifically designed to reflect the surrounding, rustic beauty provided by the 400-acre conservancy. Located on Sengekontacket Pond in Edgartown, the rock-wall-flanked home incorporated custom features, such as 18th-century French terra-cotta and Jerusalem limestone tile, a sprawling stone fireplace, and all-custom windows and exterior entryways. Interior doors were constructed of pine with woven cane panels. Like many Tate homes, the project included a depth of unique, reclaimed antique materials throughout.
