Chapel of Remembrance with
Natural Burial Ground
ARC2003M: Integrated Design Project
The project brief was to design a Natural Burial Ground with a Chapel of Remembrance. The aim of this Chapel was to take the Victorians interest in death and represent it in a thoughtful design for a location of mourning. Research was done into the Victorians fear of being buried alive and the machines they invented to tackle this as well as the colours associated with the Victorian funeral and the idea of the processional route and ghostly figures. The Chapel also wanted to celebrate life before you entered the service of a funeral so incorporated an Avery at the entrance to the Chapel and lots of Natural foliage that over time would take over the building. The two Monolithic Walls enforcing the route you take aimed to enclose you in only one thought allowing you to only look up to the sky and think of loved ones and their life.
