Smuts Colonnade, UCT Upper Campus

University of Cape Town, BAS (Honours), 2017

A drawing exercise to investigate the form of a building.

I chose to do a measured drawing of the columns that make up the colonnade of Smuts Hall on University of Cape Town's Upper Campus.
It acts as an analysis of the patterns of brickwork sequences that make up a singular column, which is in turn part of the larger sequence of a single arch with two windows above. That sequence is repeated to make up the facade of the internal courtyard.
Below the arches, in black pencil, is a simple rendering of the vaults inside the colonnade.
The picture above is the actual space.

I was initially intrigued by the play of light within the space, and by the fact that a very regular sequence makes a very legible building.
The detailing around Smuts also caught my eye, as there are few details that are repeated throughout. Performing this exercise helped me to better understand these details.
