Uninvited Collaboration: Dieter Roth

This complex book is essentially an uninvited collaboration with Dieter Roth. After a couple of weeks worth of research, the form this book takes is essentially an intersection of the way he worked (after boiling down his massive catalogue of works into a few essential points) crossed with my way of working. While his work tends to be a sensory attack, confronting not only the viewer's eyes but also their way of thinking, mine is usually more concerned with "proper" design principles and conforming to detail work (a characteristic I am working on breaking down, in general). Making such an unruly book form was a massive challenge for me, but a much-needed one. Between the out-of-control dying of papers, the imperfect binding, and the cross section of Roth's work against mine, I was forced to let go of some of that micromanaging which I so often gravitate to.

The result was a book so large, it cannot be contained in one photograph, nor should it be. While the two arms highlighting my way of working invites the viewer to pore over details across various intersecting planes, the opposing two arms reach wide, welcoming the viewer to take in the more rhythmic scribbles from a further distance. It would be interesting to revisit this project, now that several months have passed, and see if I can push myself even further out of my comfort zone.

Materials used include India inks, walnut ink, tea bags, fine point pens (mostly LePen), charcoal, graphite, waxed thread, brown and red sewing thread, wire, and a multitude of papers.
