Modular Lounge Chair System

Completed 2007
I designed this lounge system in my final year at university.

Everything was first designed in CAD, then I built the frame myself out of plywood.
I paid an upholsterer to cover the furniture and a local machine shop to laser cut and weld the aluminium sliding frame mechanism I designed.

The chair was exhibited in a small furniture exhibition as well as our end of year university exhibitions (which were held in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra in Australia)

CAD design in Rhino. I went to the local hardware store to see what wood sizes were suitable, available and affordable.
I then designed everything according to the sizes at the hardware store. (so much easier doing your research first)
The sliding mechanism was thoroughly tested. In both Rhino and Pro-e to ensure it would work effectively.
I worked on the frame outside of school hours and it came together quite easily due to all the cad and material research being done beforehand.
You can take off the front seat to access a storage area below.
The backrest slides up and more storage area is accessible.
Also, both storage areas are connected, allowing you to fit large flat items underneath (900 x 900 x 200mm storage area)
The chair was exhibited in Australia at:
 - The Canberra Centre - Civic, Canberra
 - The Atrium - Federation Square, Melbourne
This is version 2. It features a stronger all steel frame and internal spring system for increased comfort and durability.
The seating is also multi-directional, where both cushions can be used at the backrest or seat.
Finally, hidden magnets secure two or more lounges together.
