Tori Inspired Floor Lamp

My work explores the relationship between midcentury modern aesthetics and minimalist Japanese lantern design. With influences from the spiritual Tori gates and the broad shapes and curves of midcentury modern aesthetics, this lamp seeks to bring a playful yet elegant warm glow to the space it inhabits. What started out as a small desk lamp with intricate latticed shades slowly evolved into the large-scale floor lamp with a bright open framework and whimsical frame. The lines of this lamp are designed so that they look inviting and playful while being light and whimsical.  The notion of touch is expressed through the capacitive brass plate that actuates the dimming function of the lamp. The shades loose attachment to the stand lets the frame sway slightly when it is touched, giving a further sense of its lightness.
